500mb map showing locations of enhanced thunderstorm risk

Heat & Humidity Across the Carolinas

Tuesday will see a continued increase in temperatures across the Carolinas. For Central and Eastern North Carolina, as well as all of South Carolina, there will be air temperatures around 90°F. Increasing dew points will make these locations extremely humid, and as such heat indices are expected to approach 100°F. Coastal locations can expect lower temps in the mid to upper 80s. Western North Carolina is going to have a very different day on Tuesday however. Tomorrow might be unpleasant, but there is worse yet to come. Be sure to check out Meteorologist Joshua Nagelberg’s recent article about our upcoming heat wave.

Approaching Trough Brings Increased Thunderstorm Chances

A weak trough is moving east across the US and will begin to impact the weather on Tuesday for locations such as Asheville and Boone. Expect rain and thunderstorms to develop, especially after noon. The trough may impact the weather for more central locations on Wednesday, but the strongest impacts will actually be to the north in Virginia and D.C.

500mb Vorticity Map. As the purple trough moves east, the locations ahead of it will have enhanced chances for thunderstorm activity.

For the non-mountain locations, the only chances of rain/thunderstorms will be from the daytime heating, a process which anyone who has lived through one summer in the Carolinas knows about all too well.

Weather Forecast and High Temperatures for North and South Carolina
As usual, all areas have a chance of late day thunderstorms. The most noticeable aspect of the day on Tuesday will be intense humidity, leading to many locations with heat index values near or at 100°F
