Matthew will make his way north between Jamaica and Haiti over the course of the next day or so. Then we will watch him wreak havoc in the Bahamas. He will lose some strength from crossing over land, but will quickly bounce back to a cat 4.
Here comes the interesting part. Most if not all of the major forecast models, including the European, take Matthew on a westward track.
Matthew will likely be somewhere along the Southeast coast later this week. He will be a dangerous storm even if he is offshore, as his effects will be felt.
The bottom line is Matthew will make an impact on the US coast somewhere, eventually.
Please plan for the worst along the coastline.
