Saturday Set to be Coldest Christmas Eve for Carolinas in Years

There is brine on the roads here in Charlotte, as a flash freeze is expected with the upcoming temperature crash. On Friday, a very powerful cold front will sweep across the region, brining windy and much colder conditions later in the day.

The latest blend of models from the NWS shows a frigid wake-up on Christmas Eve, with widespread lows in the teens (10s). This will pose a serious concern for broken pipes due to them freezing. Also, space heaters should not be used since they are a very common starter of household/apartment fires. Don’t do it.

Will the cold last and be sustained? The short answer is no. We will warm up considerably next week and into New Years. Some of us, who are squishy like myself, will switch back to wearing shorts. Shown below is the official CPC outlook into New Years.

It might take until the 28th or so until we start to feel the warmup. But it’s coming, and so will the ones who will say “winter is cancelled.” However, today is only the first day of Winter, so we are just getting started.

As always, it should be an interesting ride, one way or another!
