Cold moves in on time to end Jan and begin Feb with wild cold

The first in a series of Arctic outbreaks is due to arrive around the 30th. If you remember, we discussed this back in mid-January. Well one of the ones is coming around the 30th, and while temperatures are not expected to be extremely cold with this outbreak, the expansion of the cold down into GA and FL is impressive. This is 7am on the 30th departures from normal.

GEFS ensembles:

The single GFS model is more aggressive with the cold, and has the NC mountains into the 10s and the Piedmont in the 20s. In reality, these temperatures could also dip into the 10s across the Piedmont as time draws closer but for now we will stick with the low 20s.

Does this pattern change encourage snowstorms? Yes, it’s always good to have cold air in place before a coastal low if you want snow. Anytime after the 3rd is looking like game-on for anything riding up or forming off the coast.
