Warm Weekend Ahead, But What Does Early March Hold?

We will be breaking some more records across the Southeast this weekend, with continued highs in the 80s. This likely has some folks thinking to start getting ready to plant gardens and mow lawns. But not so fast. A major shift is coming for the first week of March, and it has the potential to kill anything that blooms or has been planted.

While the warmth continues to surge into our area this weekend, we look ahead to the first week of March or so. There is going to be one more shot of cold air that could cause snow in some locations. Those locations are not clear yet, neither are exact snow amounts. But something could be lurking off the coast around the 5-6th along with well below average temperatures.

The corresponding GFS height anomalies for this time frame show an upper-disturbance over the Mid-Atlantic.

There are only two things that have moderate confidence at this point: cold and some kind of coastal storm. Details are still fuzzy but will become more clear as we get closer to the event.

For now, enjoy the warmth if that is your thing, because it will get cold again within the next two week.
