Weekend Travel Impacts Possible for VA, NC, SC, northern GA

A relatively high-impact winter storm will affect western NC and VA this weekend. Impacts could be pushed as far south as the upstate of SC, however current thoughts are the mountains and foothills will become the most dangerous areas to drive.

Moderate impacts are expected for Charlotte, as there could be prolonged sleet and freezing rain. This is all for Saturday afternoon into Sunday night and maybe even Monday morning. Residents should consider preparations for a southern winter storm.

Saturday-Monday travel impacts.

Where will the heaviest snows fall? This event will likely feature a lot of mixing, which means sleet and freezing rain outside of the mountains, such as Charlotte and the suburbs. Mixing may make it as far east of Raleigh, but we suspect that will be the cutoff.

Heaviest snows will likely be in the mountains and the foothills of NC and also western VA. The upstate of SC as well as northern GA could be the winners when this storm is done. Timing again is Saturday afternoon into Sunday night or even Monday morning.

Chances of heaviest snows.
