Bitterly Cold January Could be in Store

Yes, there has been lots of talk about the deep freeze coming for January. We are tracking colder times starting at our around the 2nd. Temperatures will drop into the mid 20s for most for the morning lows on Saturday 1/4. This will be the general theme up until the 9th or so, when the bottom could fall out of the Thermometer with an Arctic invasion. Below is the outlook from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center (CPC) all the way into the 24th, which is calling for a higher probability of below normal temperatures.

NOAA CPC temperature outlook through 1/24 showing well below normal chances for our area.

We could see a severe Arctic outbreak around 1/10, where morning lows could be in the single digits for many inland, and even negative single digits in the mountains, which would not be good for them. Teens could be the readings at the beaches.

The last time this happened, it was on 12/24/2022 and there were rolling blackouts to keep up with the heating energy demand. It’s not clear that this would happen again, but residents should keep this in mind if temperatures drop dangerously low again.

As far as snow, it could be “too cold to snow” with such a powerful high pressure system in place just to our west or northwest, any type of storm system would get shoved to our south, and we would get nothing. So it very well could be cold and dry.

When it gets dangerously cold, it can be “too cold to snow” due to the air being very dry. It’s hard to get moisture to create snow in very dry air. But it’s not unheard of. It snows in bitterly cold Arctic regions. But it’s a different environment there altogether.

We hope that everyone stays warm, and of course follow all local official forecasts and advisories!
