Even with the dust from the Sahara Desert over the Atlantic and even into the Gulf of Mexico, we have a couple of tropical systems that could form. Our first disturbance is an area of clouds and thunderstorms south of Bermuda, and this island could be affected by this system, although it is expected to be to the west. The National Hurricane Center gives our disturbance in the orange a 50 % chance of formation over 5 days. However, this system is expected to parallel the East Coast and not to affect the mainland US. More than likely this feature will put on more of a show than the one in the yellow.
Our second system is a tropical wave to the southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. This disturbance only has a 20 % chance of formation over 5 days. Saharan dust and upper-level shear are expected to weaken this system by the weekend.
Both of these disturbances are a reminder that we are in hurricane season, and that you should have a plan if a storm were to strike the coast. Residents that live on the coast should have an evacuation plan in case a tropical storm or hurricane should threaten.
