Wintry Threat Late Week Then Cold After

WINTRY THREAT FOR THE MOUNTAINS LATE THIS WEEK – COLD BEHIND

A mixed bag of precipitation is on tap for later this week, and cold temperatures will be the story from Friday into the weekend. A coastal disturbance will potentially form along a front that stalls after bringing us a shot of Arctic air. This system will likely be all rain especially along the coast and farther south. The Piedmont will likely see rain from the storm system, and perhaps nothing after the storm exits. The only possibility would be a random flurry on the cold northwest winds after the storm leaves.

The mountains are the most likely locations to see any wintry precip. Area C is the highest confidence for any type of flakes or sleet.

Icy cold temperatures will rush in behind the exiting storm system. Highs on Sunday are expected to be below freezing for many.

The following outlined areas are discussed below:

AREA A – Expected to be all rain , might be limited to coastal areas after the front moves through. Highs are expected to be in the 40s and 50s.

AREA B – This is the region that could see some brief flurries, not lasting anymore than 10 minutes. There could also be a brief period of sleet. Highs in the 30s.

AREA C – This area has the highest confidence for seeing any type of wintry precip, including snow and sleet. Check out the webcams, since flakes could be flying especially after the front moves through and the winds pick up.

Cold conditions will follow the departure of this storm system. Sunday morning lows will dip below freezing for much of the South, and only in the 10s in the mountains with wind. There is a moderate bust potential with this storm. The coldest air will arrive AFTER the storm starts to leave.
